OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Doctoral Program in Occupational Safety and Health (DemSSO) is a 3rd cycle course with a strong interdisciplinary perspective that results from the collaboration with thirteen of the fourteen Faculties of the University of Porto:

  • Faculty of Architecture of UP (FAUP);
  • Faculty of Fine Arts of UP (FBAUP);
  • Faculty of Sciences of UP (FCUP);
  • Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of UP (FCNAUP);
  • Faculty of Sports of UP (FADEUP);
  • Faculty of Law (FDUP);
  • Faculty of Engineering (FEUP);
  • Faculty of Pharmacy of UP (FFUP);
  • Faculty of Letters of UP (FLUP);
  • Faculty of Medicine of UP (FMUP);
  • Faculty of Dental Medicine of UP (FMDUP);
  • Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of UP (FPCEUP);
  • School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS).

Students have a wide range of themes and areas to develop their PhD Thesis.

DemSSO has as main objectives:

  • Train senior managers, holders of the skills and leadership skills necessary to develop, coordinate and control the activities of prevention and protection against occupational hazards in various sectors of economic activity
  • Develop leadership skills in scientific research in the area of occupational safety and health
  • Develop the capacity of observation and critical analysis of problems in OHS in a sustainable way, taking into account the cultural, social, economic, and political contexts
  • Develop the ability to identify, assess and formulate problems of Occupational Safety and Health
  • Develop the ability to intervene with a view to effective cultural, social, economic, and political change
  • Acquire advanced knowledge about the operationalization of different research paradigms in a critical and reflective posture on the available information
  • Develop the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

DemSSO is recognized by the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), which awards its PhD graduates the Professional Title of Advanced Occupational Safety Technician, level VIII. The doctoral degree is a requirement for entry and academic career progression in Higher Education and the differentiation of functions at the company level. Besides, it qualifies its holders to perform scientific research functions in the field of knowledge and specialization to which the degree refers and to promote and disseminate activities of high scientific and technical demand.
