CIVIL ENGINEERING
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This study cycle awards students with a doctoral degree in civil engineering and encompasses:
a) writing an original thesis which has to be specially written for this purpose and be adequate for students’ field of knowledge and specialized area;
b) the completion of course units designed for investigation, being called Doctoral Programme and awarding students with a Doctoral Programme Diploma.
The normal length of a doctoral programme is three years on a full-time basis (180 credits).
CAREER PROSPECTS
The study cycle has the main objective of creating conditions for students to produce an original thesis while acquiring: the capacity for structured knowledge in a scientific area of study; the competencies, abilities, and research methods associated with a scientific domain; and the capacity for conceiving, designing, adapting and carrying out a significant body of research, complying with high academic standards of quality and integrity.
PhDs in Civil Engineering by FEUP can promote scientific development and technological innovation in the field of Civil Engineering, not only in higher education institutions and research laboratories but also in public institutions and companies, whether in Portugal or abroad. It should be noted that, given the increasing importance of the construction, public works, and transport sectors in terms of employment and competitiveness, it is crucial for its staff to have more and more skilled human resources, that its productive activity accompany the rhythm of demand of modern society.
