ABOUT
What is Chemical Engineering?
Chemical Engineering involves the development of sustainable and safe Processes to convert raw materials into value-added Products. In a word, “Transformation”! Thus, a Chemical Engineer is devoted to the design, development, sizing, improvement, application and operation of Processes (chemical, physical or biological) that allow the desired Products to be obtained.
Who should apply?
Applicants with a background in Chemical Engineering and related fields, who wish to acquire advanced training in the areas of Process & Product, Energy, Biotechnology and Environment.
GENERIC OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering (M.EQ) is to train professionals in the field of Chemical Engineering or related areas with the highest quality standard, having in mind professional careers in the context of either industrial practice or research activities, among many others.
Emphasizing a practical engineering culture together with project activity, the syllabus offers students the possibility of acquiring specific competences in one of the following areas (specialisations): i) Processes and Products; ii) Energy; iii) Biotechnology; iv) Environment.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering intends to empower students with the following competences:
+ To understand the nature and dimension of manufacturing industries related to Chemical Engineering.
+ The ability to apply physical, chemical and biological concepts in analysis processes.
+ The ability to systematically organize information and solve fundamental and complex problems in Chemical Engineering and related areas.
+ The ability to use the available methods for conception, design, implementation and operation of systems in industrial and social contexts, with all the inherent implications.
ACCREDITATION
This programme is accredited by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES).
DIPLOMA
The Master in Chemical Engineering originates from the split of the previous Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering (MIEQ) of FEUP into two independent study cycles, in order to comply with article 19 of Decree-Law No. 65/2018 of 16th August, being the M.EQ the 2nd of those cycles. M.EQ is structured in 4 semesters, totalizing 120 ECTS, culminating in the completion of a Dissertation, which takes place in the last semester of the study plan.
The cycle of studies is composed by:
+ a master’s degree programme, not conferring a degree, consisting of an organized set of courses corresponding to 90 ECTS. It confers a diploma of master programme (non-degree) in Chemical Engineering in one of the 4 specializations: i) Process & Product, ii) Energy, iii) Biotechnology and iv) Environment. The possibility of being awarded the non-degree diploma will only occur in the 2nd year.
+ A scientific dissertation, original and specifically written for this purpose, corresponding to 30 of the total of 120 ECTS of the study cycle; the defence in public examination of the dissertation will allow the awarding of the Master degree in Chemical Engineering in one of the 4 specialisations: i) Process & Product, ii) Energy, iii) Biotechnology and iv) Environment.
Students may perform a mobility semester, in the 2nd semester of the 1st year or in the 1st semester of the 2nd year, in a higher education institution with which an exchange agreement exists. It is also possible to perform an additional semester in mobility for the completion of the dissertation, with the defence taking place at FEUP.
The degree will be awarded by FEUP.
4 reasons to choose
MEQ at FEUP
Qualified teaching staff, mostly integrated in research units of recognized excellence in the best national Chemical Engineering Department (first on QS, NTU and ARWU rankings on Chemical Engineering subject in 2020)
A broadband programme with high employability and with integration in the labour market promoted by graduation projects in companies.
Possibility of a mobility period in recognised international universities and/or companies in the field of Chemical Engineering.
Versatile study plan, with different specialisation profiles that allow the training to be adapted to the interests of each student.

Partnerships with companies
More than half of the final Master’s dissertations are carried out in a industrial context, which is one of the advantages of this programme. The companies welcome students for a period of time to develop a theme with scientific quality assurance that will give rise to a Dissertation for obtaining the Master’s degree.
Some companies where students have worked on their dissertations in recent years include:
Student Groups and Associations
NEEQ
The Chemical Engineering Students Group of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (NEEQ-FEUP) is an associative organisation composed by five departments and about seventy active members. Its objectives are to support MEQ students by offering a wide range of tools that enrich their academic path.
Employability
The following data is based on FEUP 2023 Employability Survey and relates to M.EQ graduates in 2021/2022, with 78% of a total of 73 graduates having responded to the survey.

Job Opportunities
In the areas of potential intervention in industry, the activity of a Chemical Engineer may occur both at the level of support to industrial operation, including monitoring and process control, as well as at the level of production management, including operation programming and quality control, and also at the level of industrial management, design and innovation.
The professional opportunities for graduated Masters in Chemical Engineering at FEUP include a wide range of contexts, namely in the industry, in research, in teaching institutions or in technical-commercial activities, among many others, at national and international level. Among several examples of companies with partnerships with M.EQ and the Chemical Engineering Department include: CIN, Sonae, TMG, Barbot, Amorim & Irmãos Group, Euroresinas, Continental, COLEP, CUF, Colquímica, Efacec, Monteiro Ribas, Nestlé, Unicer, Hovione, BASF.
