The Symposium on Chemical and Biological Engineering will be held in the scope of the 5th Doctoral Congress Engineering (DCE23) which will be hosted at FEUP, Porto, Portugal on the 15th and 16th of June 2023. This Symposium is organized by PhD students of the Doctoral Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering (PDEQB) at FEUP, with the support of the Associate Laboratory ALICE (integrating the R&D Units LSRE-LCMLEPABE and CEFT).

Topics for submission

PhD students, MSc students, and other researchers are welcome to present their research in this Symposium based on the following topics of interest:

  • Biological Engineering and Biotechnology
  • Reaction and Separation Processes
  • Energy and Environment
  • Product Engineering
  • Catalysis and Carbon Materials
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Transport Phenomena
  • Biorefinery and Sustainability
  • Innovative Materials and Applications
  • Modelling, Synthesis and Integration of Chemical Processes

Registration and Abstract Submission

|| DEADLINE: 31st March  28th April ||

Registration is mandatory for all participants, please click here to register.

At least one author of each accepted and revised abstract must be registered in the event, with a paid fee, for the abstracts’ reference to appear in the Booklet, in the Book of Abstracts and in the Proceedings.

FEUP students who belong to the Doctoral Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering (PDEQB), researchers, and professors must contact Prof. Alexandra Pinto – PDEQB (apinto@fe.up.pt) before proceeding with the registration.

All others (students/candidates, researchers, and professors) – from outside FEUP – that wish to register in the Symposium on Chemical and Biological Engineering may have their registrations sponsored, upon request (please contact Prof. Alexandra Pinto (apinto@fe.up.pt).

Submit the abstracts via the Microsoft CMT platform, before registration.

Please follow the abstract template, adding the authors’ names and affiliation, and including the acknowledgements of the work.

Abstracts up to 1 page will be automatically considered for poster. Extended abstracts (maximum of 3 pages) will be reviewed and will be assigned to either for oral or poster presentation.

The submission author should indicate if oral or poster presentation is preferred (on the submission platform), but please note that the Scientific Committee takes the final decision.

Presentation (oral communication/poster)

At least one of the authors is required to attend the symposium to present the abstract.

The duration of oral presentations is 10 minutes (including 3 minutes for possible discussion and questions).

Publications & Awards

All accepted and revised abstracts, with at least one author registered in DCE23 with a paid fee, will be mentioned in the Symposium Book of Abstracts with ISBN and invited to submit a full paper for Conference Proceedings papers on a special issue of the peer-reviewed open-access U.Porto Journal of Engineering (UPjeng).

The authors of accepted and revised abstracts, presented at the Symposium, will be eligible for awards on “best oral communication” and “best poster presentation”.
