The Symposium on Civil Engineering is part of the 5th Doctoral Congress in Engineering (DCE 23’), to be held on the 15th and 16th of June 2023 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
The Department of Civil Engineering at FEUP hosts education and research in various scientific fields across its sections. The Symposium welcomes submissions on the different covered areas under the short paper and poster formats:
- Building Construction
- Structures
- Geotechnics
- Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment
- Construction Materials
- Transport Infrastructures
The Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering is responsible by this Symposium and it invites all the PhD students as well as all the MSc students assigned to the Department of Civil Engineering to participate. Likewise, submissions from other doctoral and master programs, institutions and entities within the scope of the Symposium are also welcome. Additionally, sessions in the Symposium will include keynote lectures by renowned specialists.
Instruction for authors:
- Submissions are written in English;
- Participants may submit only one proposal as first author;
- Use these templates: Template paper | Template poster ;
- Electronic submissions only, through the conference submission platform;
- The submission and review process will take place in the CMT platform;
- Authors may be notified to complete and provide corrections regarding their submissions;
- Regarding the keywords, the authors must include one of the following topics: Building Construction; Structures; Geotechnics; Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment; Construction Materials; Transport Infrastructures.
Short paper category:
- Open to all PhD students and above;
- Submission of abstracts up to 500 words, until
March 31thApril 15th - Authors notified of abstract acceptance until May 12th;
- Upon selection, submission of a short paper up to 1500 words (citations excluded) until June 5th;
- Oral communication at the Symposium, June 15th or 16th;
- Abstracts will be published in the Book of Abstracts of the Symposium (with ISBN);
- Short papers will be published in the Book of Proceedings of the Symposium (with ISBN and DOI);
- Selected short papers will be invited to publish a full paper in a special issue in UP Journal of Engineering;
- Oral communications are eligible for the Prize of Best Oral Communication of the DCE23 Symposium on Civil Engineering;
Poster category:
- Open to all MSc students and above;
- Submission of abstracts, not exceeding one A4 page, until
March 31thApril 15th - Authors notified of poster acceptance until May 12th;
- A template will be provided for the submission of the poster.
- Posters will be displayed at the Symposium, June 15-16th.
- Poster abstracts will be published in the Book of Abstracts of the Symposium (with ISBN and DOI);
- The best poster will receive an official Recognition of Best Poster of the DCE23 Symposium on Civil Engineering.
Registration:
All PRODEC students, non-teaching internal research fellows and MEC, MESTEC, MMSEGEO and MPRINCE students with submissions will have their registration fee paid. The remaining participants should consult https://paginas.fe.up.pt/~dce/2023/instructions-for-authors/ for the details concerning the registration fee payment. The payment reference date should be the registration day, not the payment day.
Presentation (oral communication/poster):
At least one of the authors is required to attend the Symposium to present the scientific work.
Presentations will be held in English.

Publications:
All accepted and revised abstracts, with at least one author registered in the Congress with a paid fee, will be published in the Symposium Book of Abstracts (with ISBN). Short papers will be published in the Book of Proceedings of the Symposium (with ISBN and DOI). Selected short papers will be invited to publish a full paper in a special issue in UP Journal of Engineering (full paper with revisions completed).
