Car-Free Day 2024 Report at FEUP

July 2025

The report analyzes the impact of the “Car-Free Day” initiative, led since 2022 by FEUP’s Sustainability Commission, with the goal of encouraging more sustainable transportation. In 2024, 437 community members participated, slightly down from the 458 in 2023, due to the coincidence with the start of master’s degree classes. It is noteworthy that 22% were regular car users, who opted for alternative modes that day, saving approximately 500 kg CO₂ eq.

The data show high adoption of alternative modes among students (91%) and staff (56%) who live within 5 km, but greater car dependence for distances greater than 10 km, especially among staff. A survey of car users revealed challenges related to the quality of public transportation and highlighted necessary infrastructure improvements.

Estimation of FEUP’s socio-economic and environmental impacts

April 2020

The Board of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), in collaboration with the Commission for Sustainability, decided to promote a study whose main objective was to assess some of the main socio-economic and environmental impacts of the FEUP.

Its estimation was based on a survey conducted to the FEUP community in May 2020. However, due to the pandemic context where many behaviours have changed, the respondents were asked to report in the survey the situation relative to 2019.
