The FEUP campus encompasses approximately 23,000 m² of green spaces, representing 27% of the institution’s total area. These spaces include 24 olive trees from Alqueva, which were at risk of extinction due to the construction of the dam.

The reuse of these trees marked the beginning of efforts to enhance the aesthetic appeal and value of the green spaces and the surrounding landscape on the FEUP campus. These endeavours have been ongoing, with the replacement of specimens that have died or been removed and the introduction of new trees and shrubs to enrich the existing tree and shrub population.

The reintroduction of natural vegetation into the FEUP environment is a noteworthy contribution to the institution’s sustainable development policy.
