With the aim of ensuring a sustainable campus, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases and, at the same time, meeting energy needs, FEUP has carried out a number of initiatives:
- Energy Efficiency Measures – in 2022, the replacement of both exterior and interior lighting with LEDs was successfully completed;
- Photovoltaic panels – 708 panels on the roofs of buildings B, H, J and M with an area of 1420 m2 and installed power of 280 kW DC (average power 263.5 kW). In 2023, 422 MWh were produced, which represents around 9.1% of FEUP’s annual electricity consumption and a reduction of 85 tonnes of CO2;
- Monitoring Energy Consumption – consumption is monitored on a regular basis and by building, making it possible to detect problems at an early stage, atypical consumption, as well as alerting the community to high consumption in order to raise awareness of the need to adopt more sustainable behaviour.
As a consequence of the aforementioned initiatives, there has been a notable reduction in electricity consumption per capita (~40%) over the past decade.

Help us save electricity and contribute to a more sustainable FEUP!
