Imperial Sustainability Excellence Network virtual seminar with Dr. Jasmin Cooper from Imperial College London on Emissions from higher education institutions – how they are measured and what is being done to reduce them.
Summary
The higher education sector plays an important role in mitigating the impacts of climate change and global warming through education and research. However, they must also play a role through the actions they take in their daily lives. Universities produce greenhouse gas emissions through the consumption of energy and resources, but the way these emissions are accounted for or treated varies depending on the institution. Universities are introducing policies and strategies to reduce their environmental footprint, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Some seek to swap high-carbon fossil fuels for low-carbon alternatives, and others aim to create zero-emission buildings and campuses.
An overview of GHG emissions from higher education institutions will be presented, with a focus on UK institutions, along with the tools and methodologies used to estimate emissions. In this way, it is possible to identify what is driving emissions, as well as what discrepancies exist in the methodologies and approaches used. Initiatives being implemented to combat emissions will also be discussed, including those that have an impact on employees and students.
Speaker biography
Jasmin is a research associate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. She obtained a PhD degree in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester. In 2022 Jasmin joined the Department’s Sustainability Committee, calculating Scope 3, or indirect, emissions from the Department’s activities. Since then, Jasmin has been active in supporting the Department and the university in how it can reduce its GHG emissions, as well as how best to involve employees and students in sustainability-related topics.
