Course overview

The mining sector in Angola and Mozambique has expanded rapidly, exposing more workers to the hazards of underground, open-pit, quarrying and artisanal operations. Yet OSH professionals remain scarce and risk assessments are often missing, fostering a weak safety culture. This programme responds to that gap.

Designed for people who already have a foundation in Occupational Safety and Health, the course strengthens their qualifications and prepares them to work as OSH technicians or mine inspectors across the public and private mining sector. It combines theory with practical, simulation-based activities over five modules (180 hours / 6 ECTS).

General objective

To train mining and related professionals in occupational safety and health matters, in order to reduce occupational accidents and diseases and raise the safety levels of operations.

Learning outcomes

On completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

  • Design a plan of countermeasures for the risks identified and assessed across the mineral extraction and processing chain and related services.
  • Draw up an emergency, escape and rescue plan for mining operations.
  • Discuss the occupational safety, hygiene and health service models used in mining operations in Angola, Mozambique and internationally.
  • Conduct studies to identify and assess mining and mineral-processing risks.
  • Organise a Rescue Centre in line with specific legislation and international conventions.
  • Manage the company's occupational safety and health (HSST) department.
  • Define advanced technical OSH functions for a specific area of work in the mining industry.
  • Describe the roles and functions of the OSH team in underground and open-pit mining operations.
  • Conduct regular practical rescue exercises.
