Overview

The Sustainable Energy Systems Doctoral Program (SES PhD) is a three- to four-year degree jointly offered at each of the Portuguese Institutions participating in the MIT Portugal Sustainable Energy Systems Program. The objective of the PhD Program on Sustainable Energy Systems is to use a multi-disciplinary approach to educate a new generation of sustainability-aware leaders with expertise in energy systems and economics. A focus on energy system design and analysis, research, and leadership and entrepreneurship provides graduates with the tools to be at the forefront of sustainable energy systems development.
The symposium will occur within the parallel sessions of the Doctoral Congress in Engineering and it will be an excellent opportunity to share ongoing work or results of PhD or Master’s thesis.
Selected works will be given the chance to publish full papers in the U. Porto Journal of Engineering. The announcement of the selected abstracts will be made after the congress, along with further instructions for the authors.

Submissions

The symposium on Sustainable Energy Systems welcomes the submission of abstracts in the following topics of interest:
Smart Grid Environments
The Smart Grid chapter welcomes contributions towards advanced energy carrier infrastructures such as gas, electricity or district heating/cooling networks. This topic also includes a wide range of works directed to demand response, storages, control and protection procedures as well as operational planning.
In addition to that, this chapter is dedicated to the increased use of “big data” for the efficient planning and operation of energy networks as well as their use for estimating response flexibilities.
Urban design and Communities
The “Urban design and Communities” topic does include energy analysis and planning frameworks from macroscopic standpoint, including mobility, and energy-oriented urban studies on regional down to neighbourhood level and respective actual experiences and best practices.
Buildings and End-uses
This section welcomes contributions on the energy consumption of buildings and end-uses, integrating design and planning approaches as well as the buildings’ thermal behaviour, energy management systems, end-use appliances and consumer behaviour.
Policy and assessment
The “Policy and assessment” chapter aggregates energy markets and their regulative frameworks, energy policies and sustainable development, urban metabolism as well as the various tools in use for impact analysis (e.g. LCA, MDCA among others).
Cleaner energy supply
Advances in the development and application of renewable energy technologies and enhanced energy conversion technologies are grouped together to this last chapter This includes also the existing mix of technologies available as well as energy efficiency measures.

Submission – Instructions for authors

Abstracts must be in English and formatted according to this template with a maximum length of 2 pages.

At least one of the authors is required to attend the symposium to present the abstract in order for it to be further included in the symposium proceedings.
Accepted abstracts must prepare a 15-min. oral presentation (including 5 min. for discussion) or prepare a poster. More details will be provided later on.
