The 2022 edition had 32 proposals.

Winning ideas for the period 2016 – 2022:

  • Earth Week – with the motto “Why have only one day dedicated to the Earth, when you can have a whole week?”.
  • A day without cars – Raising awareness in the community about the planet’s sustainability issues, through an initiative that proposes a car-free day on the campus of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
  • FEUP without cigarette butts – Placement of transparent containers designed for that purpose that are suggestive for the placement of cigarette butts. These containers must be appealing, allowing, when faced with a funny question, to answer by placing the cigarette butts, contributing to a poll. Each answer corresponds to its own container.
  • Quench your thirst, water the green – Creation of several drinking fountains, distributed throughout the FEUP spaces, providing drinking water to the whole community and using the wasted water from consumption for watering. This saves the amount of plastic that, in most cases, is not recycled, watering vegetation without an additional cost and encouraging water consumption without any cost.
  • cafECO – coffee the ecological way – This project seeks to raise awareness among the university community about the excessive use of plastic, namely disposable coffee cups. The central idea is to offer an economic, viable and durable alternative to the users of FEUP’s coffee machines: highly durable reusable cups.
  • Waste 0 in the FEUP canteen – This project aims to develop a mathematical model to estimate the demand for a given dish on a given day in the FEUP canteen. The aim is to align the quantity of food prepared with the demand for each dish on each day, minimising food waste.
  • Sustainable Mobility – End of Free Parking at FEUP – The FEUP community continues to rely heavily on the car as a mode of transport leading to a huge societal impact. One of the main incentives for this is the provision of free parking within FEUP facilities. Such incentive should end and the funds raised should be applied to the implementation of sustainable measures.
  • De bicla para a FEUP – Online game with the goal of cycling the greatest number of kilometres to and from the FEUP. This game would be supported by a mobile application that would track the kilometres covered by users. There would be prizes to be won through sponsors interested in joining this sustainable initiative.
  • FEUP SUSTAINABLE – Turn on and off FEUP computers from home – Researchers, teachers and employees of FEUP sometimes leave the computer on to access it remotely from home, but it is completely unnecessary thanks to a little known feature: the WOL…
