The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) is strongly committed to the promotion of sustainable development and the integration of its principles in its activities. Thus, since 2006 it has published a sustainability report. It was the first Portuguese higher education institution to do so. Firstly, this report was elaborated through an adaptation of the guidelines of the Reporting Global Initiative. Later, a report model was developed that was considered to be better adapted to a Higher Education Institution. From 2008, the report started to be prepared using this template.

In 2015, the Commissioning for Sustainability (CS) came into office with the mission of contributing to a better society, incorporating the principles of sustainable development in FEUP’s decision-making processes, reflected in its operations and core activities (education, research & development and interaction with society).

The strategic priorities defined by the SC encompass 4 strategic themes and 11 objectives, which were selected taking into consideration the critical success factors identified, potential threats, as well as the growing commitment to sustainability at the international level.
