OPEN FORUM

The conference will also include an Open Forum on

Strategies for Changing Faculty Behaviour: Balancing Teaching, Research and Service

Coordinated by

Professor Shaker A, Meguid

(U.Toronto, Canada)

Needless-to-say, Professors worldwide typically devote more time and effort to research than to teaching and service. It is their belief that the latter two are inferior to research, which is used as a measure of intellectual superiority. To change this behavior, and balance the three, university administrators encourage academic staff to devote greater time to teaching through, for example, teaching workshops, staff evaluation criteria, teaching awards, and financial incentives. With the changing role of universities and the drastic cuts of funding by governments worldwide, diminished research activities and contract research could lead to inferior quality education and standing within the community as well as the inability to maintain the university mission as “houses of learning and knowledge advancement”.  A significant amount of inventions as well as progress and development are the result of research active universities.

The questions to be discussed in this open forum include:

(i)       How important is undergraduate education?

(ii)      How can we improve undergraduate education without compromising research and service?

(iii)     Can we use postgraduates to effectively teach undergraduates?

(iv)     How important is research?

(v)      How important is service to university wellbeing?

(vi)     Can we truly balance these activities?

(vii)     What should the weighting be for these activities?

(viii)    Should we develop two main streams: teachers’ stream and researchers’ stream?

(ix)     Can the “teachers stream” truly provide an up-to-date education to undergraduates?

(x)      What is the price of diminished research activities upon the university mission as houses of learning and knowledge advancement?

All delegates are invited to participate in this forum
