ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME

What is Service Engineering and Management?

The Master in Service Engineering adopts a T-Shaped educational approach to conceive, develop, implement and operate technology-enabled service systems, building upon student’s background (first degree) and adding cross-disciplinary competences in service engineering and management

MESG has an engineering approach that is a distinctive characteristic when compared with other Service Masters. This engineering approach involves three main aspects:

  • Systems approach, crucial for addressing service systems that integrate, people, processes and technologies (e.g. health care).
  • Process design and management, crucial for services that are ‘processes and activities’.
  • ICT competencies, which are nowadays crucial to address the pervasive technology-enabled services.
  • Strong CDIO engineering approach, with project-based learning to develop competences so students can conceive, develop, implement, and operate service systems, with a strong focus on technology-enabled service systems.

Who should apply?

Being a Master degree (second cycle), MESG starts with a multidisciplinary set of students, mostly from engineering or management.

MESG candidates must have a good BSc first degree or equivalent degree (180 ECTS) in Engineering, Engineering Sciences, Computing, Mathematics, Economics, or Management. According to each candidate’s background, a plan of studies can be defined to best complement previous competencies.

English proficiency is required.

SCHEDULE
Full time MESG students will be required to work full time on the courses and projects during the two years. As such, this program is not compatible with full-time jobs. However, a significant number of courses are lectured on Friday and Saturday morning. As such, it may be possible to complete the MESG while working.

NUMERUS CLAUSUS
The Course will run with a maximum of 30 participants.

THESIS

Since the first students joined MESG in 2007, more than 200 master thesis or projects have been successfully completed. Thesis topics include service operations, business processes, service design, among others.

The master thesis or project takes place full-time in a selected institution, according to a previously defined work program according to specific protocol between that institution, FEUP, and the student.

The project has a duration of about 20 weeks (30 ECTS – 810 hours) generally involving the following tasks:

– Detailed definition of the problem

– Literature review

– Definition of methodology

– Data collection and analysis/development of a solution

– Preparation of thesis document

– Final public presentation and discussion with an evaluation committee

The project will have an advisor designated by FEUP and may have an advisor at the project’s host institution, which can be a company or a research organization. It is also possible to carry out the project within a research unit of FEUP.

MESG students take a course on research methodology previous to the start of the thesis project.

The list of finished master thesis and projects is available here.

If you and your company want to propose a topic for a MESG master thesis, you can get in touch with us through mesg@fe.up.pt
