ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME
What is Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering?
Training of professionally competent and qualified staff to understand, conceive, design and implement optimised technical solutions in the areas of Exploration, Exploitation, and Treatment of Mineral Raw Materials, as well as in the area of the Geoenvironment, with a view to environmental preservation, recovery and sustainability, understood as fundamental pillars of social cohesion and well-being.
Who should apply?
To candidates with a vocation and interest in the area of Engineering and, particularly, in the area of Earth and Geoenvironmental Sciences.
OBJECTIVES
This 2nd Cycle degree in Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering, is recognised by Accreditation Agencies (EURACE and A3ES) as providing a complete professional training.
Competences, capacities and skills, on completion of the MEMG:
- Ability to know, understand, design and operate in all dimensions of mining knowledge and technologies – exploration/recognition, exploitation/extraction, treatment/processing, environmental integration – in a technically and scientifically sound way, in a holistic project perspective;
- Personal, understanding and problem-solving skills in complex and multidisciplinary contexts, in particular of Mining Engineering;
- Ability to issue well-founded and high-quality technical, social and ethical judgments/opinions;
- Ability to develop autonomous work, as well as work in multidisciplinary teams;
- Ability to keep up-to-date throughout their professional life;
- Ability to understand, adapt and integrate into any sector of activity, at the level of production processes.
TRANSVERSAL SKILLS
The study cycle has 3 ECTS credits dedicated to transversal skills optional course units.
DIPLOMA
The Master in Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering, MEMG, is the 2nd Cycle of a set of three Cycles of training in Mining Engineering at FEUP:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering, 3 years, 180 ECTS
- Master in Mining Engineering and Geo-Environmental Engineering, 2 years, 120 ECTS
- PhD in Mining Engineering and Geo-Anvironmental Resources, 3 years, 180 ECTS

The study cycle is accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES). More information can be found in the reports produced by A3ES.

Mining Engineering Students Group
GEM-FEUP, Mining Engineering Group, is a youth association of students from the Department of Mining Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. This association aims to contribute to a better professional and personal training of its members, creating opportunities and fostering the interest and union of students from the study cycles of Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering.
It also aims to be a link between the students and Companies, Institutions and other Entities related to the Extractive Industry.

FAQ
The Master’s in Mining and Geo-environmental Engineering is lectured in person and during working hours. At this moment, due to the pandemic, theoretical classes are lectured online, and practical classes are lectured in person.
The extractive industry is multidisciplinary, and this master’s stands out for its broad curricular scope. Holders of an adequate academic training in Engineering or Earth Sciences may apply. Holders of a scholar, scientific and professional curriculum that attests the ability to carry out the master’s degree are also eligible.
In 2021, according to the QS World University’s Rankings, one of the most important international rankings, the University of Porto is placed as 357º in a total of 1186 assessed universities, worldwide. Specifically in Technology and Engineering, FEUP is placed as 178º worldwide, being the highest ranked Portuguese faculty.
