Partners

Information Science at the University of Porto – ci@UPorto – is part of the organization iSchools – Information Schools. iSchools is an international organization and movement with a mission to lead and advance the field of Information. It seeks to maximize the visibility and influence of its members, in an interdisciplinary context, putting the power of information and technology at the service of society.

The Dissertation as a link between University – Companies

The MCI “Dissertation/Project” course unit – final year (2nd), 1st and 2nd semesters – consists of carrying out a work within the area of knowledge of Information Science where the student applies and develops the scientific and technical skills acquired in the course. It is also intended to promote the development of initiative, decision-making, innovation, creative and critical thinking skills, in an individual or group work context. This work may be more of a research nature or a more technical (project) nature. In both cases the work will culminate with the writing of a dissertation.

The dissertation/project work can be carried out in an academic or business/institutional environment. In the case of a dissertation in a business/institutional environment, the objectives, nature and way of monitoring the work must be subject to prior agreement between the student and the UP and the company/institution supervisors so that the satisfaction of the objectives is guaranteed, scientific and pedagogical nature of the curricular unit, and the protection of possible confidentiality issues by the host company/institution.

This model is intended to promote dissertations with a strong innovation component, resulting in a de facto collaboration between university and companies/institutions.

How does the program fit in with MCI?

The Studies measure works through the establishment of bilateral agreements between institutions, constituting partnerships that agree on the mobility of students and teachers on a reciprocal basis.

The Internships measure does not require any prior agreement between the institutions (home and host).
