Photonics and Optoelectronics

Optoelectronics is quickly becoming a fast emerging technology field that consists of applying electronic devices to sourcing, detection, and control of light. Futhermore, Photonics is known as "technology for generating and harnessing light, whose quantum unit is the photon." Photonics utilizes lasers, optics, imaging and more to impact every area of modern life.

In PRODEF, the students are able to work closely with INESCTEC that incorporates R&D Centres of Optoelectronics and Photonics that are scattered throughout the Campuses of the University of Porto.

INESC TEC is a private non-profit research association, with Public Interest status

The Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) Research Laboratory is an Advanced laboratory for optical and microwave communications, where researchers
can test and characterise optoelectronic devices, RF/microwave circuits and waveguides.

The laboratory was created in 2007 and is used for research purposes by 25 collaborators, all of them working at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications
and Multimedia (CTM).

Location: INESC TEC Building, FEUP Campus, Porto.

The Imaging Lab focuses on the development and improvement of optical measurement and imaging techniques.

The systems  developed target the applications where microscopy is unable to provide an acceptable response, either due to the requirement for sample
preparation (dicing, contact, accessibility) or to cost/performance constraints when depth discrimination is paramount.

The techniques explored aim at achieving high spatial resolutions and non-invasiveness when probing samples.

The expertise acquired has been demonstrated in different fields of application, ranging from optical inspection of industrial products to quality control
and biological tissues.

Location: FCUP Campus, Porto.

At CAP (Center of Applied Photonics) its performed R&D in applied photonics, principally focusing on optical fibre technology.

CAP is oriented towards applied research and development in optical fibre sources, optical fibre communication, optical fibre sensors and microfabrication
(thin films and integrated optics).

Location: FCUP Campus, Porto.
