Bipolar Disorder, previously called “manic depression”, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings, which can range from manic to depressive states. Unlike simple mood swings, each episode of Bipolar Disorder can last for several weeks, so this disorder should not be confused with mild and rapid changes in mood.
Its symptoms significantly interfere with everyday life and depend on the type of mood being experienced. At one extreme (the manic), you may feel overjoyed, with the energy to achieve plans that turn out to be too ambitious and lose the will to carry out basic life tasks. At the other (the depressive), you can develop highly devaluing feelings and suicidal thoughts.
If you are feeling suicidal, call 112 or go to the nearest psychiatric emergency room.
If you are feeling intensely and persistently depressed, contact a professional (Psychologist, Psychiatrist, General Practitioner).
Bipolar Disorder is treatable and can be controlled, allowing you to live as normal a life as possible.
