On 18 March<\/strong>, the Commission for Sustainability at FEUP, as part of the celebrations of the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development<\/strong>, hosted a session dedicated to the theme \u201cSustainable Design and Operations in Uncertain Times\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The lecture was delivered by Professor Steve Evans<\/strong>, Director of Research in Industrial Sustainability at the University of Cambridge, internationally recognised for his work in promoting sustainable change at scale.<\/p>\n

During the session, key challenges and opportunities related to developing sustainable solutions in highly uncertain contexts were addressed, highlighting the importance of sustainable business model innovation, system transformation, and the integration of sustainability principles into engineering design and operations.<\/p>\n

Professor Steve Evans leads research in areas such as sustainable business model innovation, system transformation, the limits of efficiency, and sustainability policy in developing countries. Throughout his career, he has led pioneering projects in multidisciplinary engineering teams, eco-design, and the circular economy, with total funding exceeding \u00a330 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With over 30 years of academic experience<\/strong>, he has collaborated with leading industrial and academic institutions worldwide. He has also served as Specialist Adviser to the UK House of Lords Science and Technology Committee and is a serial clean-tech start-up founder.<\/p>\n

His achievements include being a Fellow<\/strong> of several prestigious institutions, including the Institution of Engineering & Technology, the Royal Society for Arts, and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. He has also recently been recognised as Honorary Treasurer of Academia Europaea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This initiative was part of the activities promoted by FEUP to celebrate the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, reinforcing the institution\u2019s commitment to advancing knowledge and practices that contribute to a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>
