Natural Resources and Environment Centre – FEUP Pole

CERENA’s mission is to develop Research related to the sustainable use of natural resources, including energy, and its impact on the environment, at the highest level of excellence. CERENA uses an approach that is both integrative, multidisciplinary and multidimensional – from the molecular level to the planetary scale – where researchers from different scientific fields – earth, chemical and materials engineering – converge towards the same goals.

The studies cover the 5 phases of the mining life cycle: exploration, extraction, processing, metallurgy, mine closure and remediation (monitoring, risk analysis, eco-efficient systems and bio-hydrometallurgical processes for ore and waste processing).
Characterisation, management, environmental risk analysis and remediation of geo-environmental compartments (soil and groundwater), with emphasis on the use of innovative in-situ technologies.
