The Neurodiversity initiative emerges at FEUP, in collaboration with FPCEUP and Brainstorm – the Portuguese Association for ADHD, born from the desire to make higher education more inclusive for neurodivergent students.
We start from the premise that neurological differences are part of human diversity, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Reading and Writing Learning Disorder (commonly known as Dyslexia), or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). When education does not adapt to these differences, many students face barriers that are difficult to overcome, which do not reflect a lack of effort, but rather a lack of support and accommodations.
The goal of this initiative is to promote a more aware, empathetic, and neuroinclusive academic community, where all minds can learn and thrive.
We begin by addressing ADHD, followed by Dyslexia, and later ASD (among others we will cover). We invite the entire community to explore the content we publish here, to reflect, and to actively participate in building a more diverse and neuroinclusive university.
On this page, you will find letters sent by students to faculty members, sharing their daily challenges. These messages aim to highlight the obstacles neurodivergent students face in their day-to-day lives. They will be published on the initiative’s BLOG so they can be consulted and serve as a reference for future memory.
Here, you will also find informational bulletins on relevant topics.
We invite the Academic Community to contribute—always in the context of promoting Neurodiversity—by proposing topics to be addressed, message texts to be sent, and also comments/suggestions on previously sent messages.
