DESCRIPTION:GITMob meeting no. 20 \nThis session took place on 20 February 2020 at room L202A of Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). The topic of the session was Mobile Wireless Systems for Smart Mobility\, presented by Ana Aguiar \, a Professor at FEUP. \n  \n \nAbstract \nSmarter mobility is expected to play a key role in the reduction of urban carbon footprint by changing the way people move. Mobile wireless systems can foster this change by supporting better transportation planning and by improving the mobility experience in more environmental friendly modes. This talk will discuss requirements\, challenges\, and solutions for both dimensions collected during 7 years of experimental projects in the field of intelligent mobility in the city of Porto. In the first part\, I will identify challenges of using mobile crowdsensed data\, and show how it may still be useful to urban planners. I will also describe our efforts to use data from legacy sensors and from a taxi fleet to estimate traffic in the city of Porto\, in the context of an eco-routing application developed to demonstrate the potential of mobile IoT to support mobility. \n  \nShort Bio \nAna Aguiar is Assistant Professor at the University of Porto (UP) and researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). Her research focuses on wireless and mobile systems\, concretely vehicular networks\, WiFi networks for mobile nodes\, mobile IoT\, and spatio-temporal data science for smart mobility. She is the director of IT Porto\, where she coordinates the Network and Information Processing Group\, and leads the Shannon Lab. She is adjunct coordinator of the Center of Competences for Future Cities at UP\, operating the crowdsensing tool SenseMyCity. She was the CTO of CooDriver GmbH\, a german start-up developing a solution for protection of vulnerable road users between 2016 and 2018. She lead the VOCE project on voice stress detection\, and participated in more than 15 projects\, in 9 of them as co-PI or WP leader. She published more than 60 journal and conference articles\, is reviewer for several IEEE transactions journals\, collaborates in part of the organising committees of several IEEE conferences (local arrangements chair of IEEE VTC 2018\, publicity co-chair of IEEE WoWMoM 2018 and 2019\, student travel grant chair of ACM Mobicom 2016 and 2020\, TPC of Infocom 2018\, 2019 and 2020)\, and is an expert with the EC.

The topic of the session was Intelligent Transport Systems business area of ARMIS\, presented by Rui Gomes\, a senior researcher with ARMIS. \n  \nAbstract\nARMIS is a technology-based company devoted to provide Information Technologies (IT) services in a wide range of areas\, such as transport\, sports\, health\, finance utilities\, telco’s and public administration. Sustained by state of the art technology\, continuous development\, attention to the user experience and customer orientation\, ARMIS initiated its activities in 2005 and it is in several countries in the following three main business areas: ITS – Intelligent Transport Systems; IT – Development of technological solutions; and DS – Digital Sport. In the ITS area\, ARMIS is an expert in applying state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to the transport sector\, promoting sustainability\, efficiency\, and safety through smart products and services for improving security and coordination of transport networks. It has participated in several projects for the industry of infrastructures and transport in the areas of traffic management and control\, driver information systems\, telematics and automation\, road infrastructure management\, data management and business intelligence\, data exchange interfaces\, service quality measurement and contractual management. In this presentation\, we will try to show how a Portuguese SME came to participate in and manage multi-million European projects in ITS and be part of multiple international standardization groups\, such as DATEXII and NeTEx. We’ll be talking about European ITS policies\, C-ITS\, AVs\, and a whole lot more. Fasten your seat belts\, please! \n  \nShort Bio\nRui Gomes holds a BSc and an MSc in Informatics Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and a Ph.D. in Transportation Systems from the MIT‐Portugal Program at the University of Porto. Since 2008\, he has been Researcher and Invited Professor at several Higher Education Institutions\, such as the University of Porto\, the University of Coimbra\, the University of Aveiro\, the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra and the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. His main research interests are Intelligent Transport Systems\, Demand Responsive Transport systems\, Artificial Intelligence\, Combinatorial Optimisation\, and Metaheuristics. Pursuing these research interests resulted in the publication of several scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals\, book chapters\, and presentations at conferences\, as well as supervision of a number of MSc thesis. Rui Gomes has also been a reviewer for several international scientific conferences and journals in the area of transportation\, logistics\, and artificial intelligence. Between 2016 and 2018\, he was the PI in an FCT funded research project at the University of Coimbra on the area of urban mobility. Rui Gomes is with Armis since 2016\, where he is responsible for the ITS Consultancy department.

The topic of the session was Identifying relevant transfer-connections from entry-only Automatic Fare Collection data\, presented by Joana Hora \, a Ph.D. student of the Doctoral Program in Transportation Systems of FEUP. \n  \nAbstract \nThe synchronization of Public Transportation (PT) systems usually considers a simplified network to optimize the flows of passengers at the principal axes of the network. This work aims to identify the most relevant transfer-connections in a PT network. This goal is pursued with the development of a methodology to identify relevant transfer-connections from entry-only Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) data. The methodology has three main steps: the implementation of the Trip-Chaining-Method (TCM) to estimate the alighting stops of each AFC record\, the identification of transfers\, and finally\, the selection of relevant transfer-connections. \n  \nShort Bio \nJoana Hora received an MS.c. in Industrial Engineering in 2009\, and an MS.c. in Quantitative Methods in 2012\, by the University of Porto. She is a Ph.D. candidate of the Doctoral Program in Transportation Systems – MIT Portugal Program and a researcher at INESC TEC (CEGI). Her research interests include operations research\, optimization methods\, transportation systems\, data mining\, and data analysis.

This research aims to close this gap and highlight some relevant “research insights” by describing and analyzing the reality of 34 successful business-to-consumer carsharing organizations operating throughout the world.

The topic of the session was Urban Mobility Intelligence from Big Data\,  presented by Joel Ribeiro\, a researcher with the Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores\, Tecnologia e Ciência (INESC TEC). \n  \nAbstract \nBig data consists of a massive amount of complex data – which is constantly growing – that could not be handled by traditional information technology systems in reasonable times. This inability is due to data size (Volume)\, heterogeneity (Variety)\, speed of change (Velocity)\, and uncertainty (Veracity)\, the so-called four Vs that describe the characteristics of big data. The growth of digital networking over the last decades enabled not only the integration of people\, businesses and systems but also the access to all kinds of information. Regarding urban mobility\, big data can provide useful insights on urban dynamics and related aspects such as demography\, environment\, and land use. This knowledge may support strategic and operational applications\, from planning and design to evaluation and management. \n  \nShort Bio \nJoel Ribeiro is a researcher at INESC TEC. Joel got his doctorate degree in Process Mining from the Eindhoven University of Technology with the dissertation “Multidimensional Process Discovery” (2013). He has worked as a researcher in many academic and industry projects across Europe with different business perspectives. Currently\, he is working in the opti-MOVES project\, which aims at the quality management of intermodal public transport services: diagnosis and optimization. His research interests include process and data science\, business intelligence\, business process management\, logistics\, and transportation systems.

Several logistics measures have been proposed to address the negative externalities of urban freight distribution. We present a brief overview of these measures\, with a particular focus on the logistics and transport organization of urban distribution systems. \n  \nShort Bio \nBruno Oliveira received an MSc in Operations Research and statistics in 2012\, by the Faculty of Sciences – University of Lisbon. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate for the Doctoral Program in Transportation Systems – MIT Portugal Program. SUMMARY:Meeting #8 – The impact of dedicated roads for automated vehicles in urban transport networks
DESCRIPTION:  \nGITMob meeting no. 8 \nThis session took place on 2 May 2019 at room L202A of Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP). The topic of the session was The impact of dedicated roads for automated vehicles in urban transport networks\, presented by Lígia Conceição \, a Ph.D. student of the Doctoral Program in Transportation Systems of FEUP. \n  \nAbstract \nThis research is focused on a complex transport planning problem of designing a road network for the deployment of AVs\, where the network comprises links for mixed traffic and links for the exclusive use of automated traffic. A non-linear programming model evaluates the benefits of having dedicated infrastructure for AVs and the associated costs from CVs detour. Strategies are analyzed in the long-term. My case study is the city of Delft in the Netherlands. Dedicated roads for AVs are a beneficial strategy at system-level\, reducing the overall generalized costs and the average congestion. However\, AVs associated comfort might result in more CVs trips and extra queueing in the surroundings of AVs zones. \n  \nShort Bio \n​Lígia Conceição\, MIT Portugal Ph.D. candidate in Transport Systems. During her Ph.D.\, she visited TU Delft and MIT\, where she developed research related to operations research and machine learning focused on transport planning and traffic control strategies. Several logistics measures have been proposed to address the negative externalities of urban freight distribution. We present a brief overview of these measures\, with a particular focus on the logistics and transport organization of urban distribution systems. \n  \nShort Bio \nBruno Oliveira received an MSc in Operations Research and statistics in 2012\, by the Faculty of Sciences – University of Lisbon. The topic of the session was On the road to autonomous vehicles: Drivers’ perspective\, presented by António Lobo \, a researcher from CITTA/FEUP. \n  \nAbstract \nA safe and highly acceptable automated driving experience strongly depends on how drivers understand and interact with technology. The AUTODRIVING Project will develop decision-supporting tools to assist the development of collaborative driving technology\, taking into consideration the users’ perspective. These instruments will increase the capacity of industrial stakeholders and regulatory bodies to ensure a smooth transition to automated driving and to promote the societal acceptance of autonomous vehicles. \n  \nShort Bio \nAntónio Lobo is a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto\, Portugal\, where he has accumulated more than 11 years of research experience in the field of Transport Engineering. He holds an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering\, a Ph.D. in Transport Systems\, and a Post-Graduate in Business Intelligence and Analytics from the University of Porto. He has co-authored one book and more than 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. His main research interests include road safety and operations\, driving behavior\, automated driving\, and transport economics. He currently is the Ambassador for Portugal of the Association for European Transport (AET).

The topic of the session was Mobility and Innovation Systems – Ambient Mobility Fleet\, presented by Marco Amorim from Fraunhofer IAO\, Stuttgart\, Germany. \n  \nAbstract \nFor the cities of tomorrow\, comprehensive mobility and energy concepts are required to establish a sustainable transport ecosystem. Our research topics focus on fleet electrification\, recognizing and assessing the service potential of automated driving\, and analyzing (mobility) data to craft new business models. In joint cross-sector projects\, we identify and harness technological potential that can help market players gain or even sharpen their competitive edge. For empirical and experimental evidences of the theoretical concepts we test our approaches on our own fleet of electric vehicles\, in our smart microgrid living lab or in our in-house mobility innovation lab\, which is a prototyping facility as well as a creativity space for the creation of ideas and workshops. \n  \n
