Leading the Digital Transformation

The Symposium on Informatics, part of the 6th Doctoral Congress in Engineering (DCE25), will take place at FEUP, Porto, Portugal, on June 30th and 1st of July 2025.
This Symposium is organized by PhD students of the Doctoral Program in Informatics Engineering (PRODEI), Doctoral Program in Digital Media (PDMD), and Doctoral Program in Computer Science (MAPi).
The Symposium Organizing Committee is pleased to invite everyone interested in expanding and sharing their knowledge and expertise in the field of Informatics Engineering, Computer Science and Digital Media, to submit their work. This invitation is open to PhD and MSc students.
Topics for submission include (but are not limited to):
- Informatics Engineering
- Computer Science
- Digital Media/ Multimedia
- Information / Data Science
Submissions
This symposium will have two tracks:
- Best journal/conference paper award
Presentation Format: Oral communication
Students are invited to submit an abstract of an already published paper (with DOI) in the scope of their PhD/MSc work.
A selection of the best papers will be done based on the quality of the work and impact of the publication, assessed by a jury.
The submission must be done through the SCI-MEET platform.
- Research proposal
Presentation Format: 3 min pitch presentation and panel discussion
Students are invited to submit an abstract of a research proposal. PhD student can refer to their thesis project and MSc students can refer to their thesis dissertation as a research proposal for an eventual PhD application.
The submission must be done through the SCI-MEET platform.
For more information, please click HERE.
Due to the high number of submissions to the Symposium on Informatics, it was necessary to adjust the presentation times for posters and oral communications. These will now range between 5 and 10 minutes — please refer to the program for the specific time allocated to each presentation.
Registration & Payment
Registration is mandatory for all participants through the SCI-MEET platform.
The 3 Doctoral Programs involved (PRODEI, PDMD and MAPi) will cover the registration costs for any student registered in these programs, or a student of FEUP with accepted submission.
A limited number of registration waivers will be granted to other students, researchers or professors from FEUP, depending on the number of attendees.
Please note that at least one author per submitted abstract must register for the Congress as soon as possible to secure participation.
Awards
Authors of accepted articles in track 1 (Best journal/conference paper award) presented at the Congress will be eligible for the Best Paper Award.

Crowds and Graphics: Beyond Animation and Visual Effects
The aim of crowd modelling is to propose mathematical representations and numerical methods for calculating the movement of simulated crowds in order to understand, reproduce or predict the behaviour of real crowds. This subject is at the interface of many disciplines, including mathematics, physics, biology, cognitive sciences and, of course, computer sciences. Because crowds generate visually fascinating patterns, computer graphics has proposed important contributions to the field from the outset, especially through the seminal work of Craig Reynolds who proposed the well-known Boids model in the late 80s to enable the visual effects of films such as Burton’s Batman Returns. Almost 40 years have passed.
In this talk, I will put into perspective some recent results and advances in the field from a computer graphics perspective. I will present a variety of specific and recent contributions from our discipline to the field of crowd modelling, and why I think our community has major assets to shape the future of this research, well beyond the limits of the field of visual effects for cinema, touching on the safety of mass events, for example.
Julien Pettré
Senior Researcher, Inria Centre at Rennes University
Biography
Julien Pettré is a computer scientist. He is senior researcher at Inria, the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control. He is leading the VirtUs team at the Inria Center of Rennes. He received PhD from the University of Toulouse III in 2003, and Habilitation from the University of Rennes I in 2015. From 2004 to 2006, he was postdoctoral fellow at EPFL in Switzerland. He joined Inria in 2006.
Julien Pettré is coordinator of the European H2020 Fet Open CrowdDNA project (2020-2024), dedicated to future emergent technologies for crowd management in public spaces. He previously coordinated the European H2020 Crowdbot project (2018-21) dedicated to the design of robot navigation techniques for crowded environments, as well as the national ANR JCJC Percolation project (2013-17) dedicated to the design of new microscopic crowd simulation algorithms, and the national ANR CONTINT Chrome project, dedicated to efficient and designer-friendly techniques for crowd animation.
His research interests are crowd modeling and simulation, computer animation, virtual reality, robot navigation and motion planning.
