Future Frontiers in Biomedical Engineering: Advances and Innovation

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to be a part of the Symposium in Biomedical Engineering, integrated on the 6th Doctoral Congress in Engineering (DCE), which will be hosted at FEUP, Porto, Portugal on June 30 and July 1, 2025.
This Symposium aims to transfer knowledge between FEUP and other national and international participants, encouraging them to present their ongoing research and promote networking. Work presentations can be done in both oral and poster formats. The event is mainly focused on the participation of doctoral students, yet master students, postdoctoral researchers, and other professionals are welcome to submit their work.
With the motto “Future Frontiers in Biomedical Engineering: Advances and Innovation” this symposium provides a valuable forum for researchers and students to engage in discussions on cutting-edge scientific and technological developments in Biomedical Engineering. It offers an exceptional opportunity to share ideas, gain valuable insights, and network with experts in the field.
Topics for submission include (but are not limited to):
- Bioimaging and radiation;
- Bioinformatics;
- Biomechanics;
- Biomedical devices;
- BioRobotics;
- Computer Modelling;
- Computer Vision;
- Information Management and Hospital Equipment.
- Nanobiotechnology;
- Neuroscience/Neuroengineering;
- Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials;
Other subfields related to Biomedical Engineering are also accepted, please contact the committee for additional clarifications.
This Symposium is organized by PhD students of the Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering (PRODEB) at FEUP, with the support of the Associate Laboratories i3S, INESC-TEC, REQUIMTE-LAQV, LAETA and R&D unit LEPABE.

The Symposium Committee invites you to present your ongoing research or recent findings and be part of this dynamic scientific exchange.

Turning Sweet in Oncology: glycans as regulators of cancer development with clinical implications
Salomé Pinho
Immunology, Cancer & GlycoMedicine Group leader, i3S-UP
Biography
Salomé Pinho developed her PhD research at the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of Univ. Porto (IPATIMUP) and at Boston Medical School, MA, USA from 2006 to 2009. She performed her postdoctoral work at University of Porto in the glycobiology and glyco-immunology fields. Presently, she is a Principal Investigator and Group leader at i3S-Institute for Research and Innovation in Health at University of Porto, Portugal and affiliated Professor at Faculty of Medicine at University of Porto. The goal of her research group is to disentangle the spatiotemporal regulation of glycans in health and disease and to decipher its biological information to better understand its impact in defining the magnitude, the nature and the fate of the immune responses associated with inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer envisioning novel prognostic, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies. She is author of several publications in international peer-reviewed journals including Nature Reviews Cancer, Nature Immunology, Gastroenterology, Science Translational Medicine, PNAS among many others. She has been awarded with prestigious grants funded by the Horizon Europe, ERC and the US Department of Defense (among others), and has been receiving important awards such as the Young Investigator Award from the European Association for Cancer Research (2012), The Pfizer award in Clinical research (2021) and the Glycobiology Significant Achievement Award (2020) by the American Society of Glycobiology, among other prizes and distinctions. She is currently the Vice-President of Portuguese Society of Immunology.
