The Symposium on Chemical and Biological Engineering will be held in the scope of the 4th Doctoral Congress Engineering (DCE21) which will be hosted at FEUP, Porto, Portugal on the 28th and 29th of June 2021 (online). This Symposium is organized by PhD students of the Doctoral Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering (PDEQB) at FEUP, with the support of the Associate Laboratory ALICE (integrating the R&D Units LSRE-LCM, LEPABE and CEFT).
Topics for submission
PhD students, MSc students and other researchers are welcome to present their research in this Symposium based on the following topics of interest, but not limited to:

Submit the abstracts via the Easychair platform, after registration.
Please follow the poster abstract template or the oral communication abstract template, adding the authors’ names and affiliation, and including the acknowledgements of the work.
Abstracts up to 1 page will be automatically considered for poster. Short papers (maximum of 3 pages) will be reviewed and will be assigned to either for oral or poster presentation. Please check the “INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS” menu for further information.
Publications & Awards
All accepted and revised abstracts, with at least one author registered in DCE21 with a paid fee, will be mentioned in the event’s booklet and published in the Symposium Book of Abstracts (with ISBN and DOI). || Download the BoA here||
Moreover, this Symposium will be open for Conference Proceedings papers on a special issue of the peer-reviewed open-access U.Porto Journal of Engineering (UPjeng).
The authors of accepted and revised abstracts, presented at the Symposium, will be eligible for awards on “best oral communication” and “best poster presentation”.

Invited Speakers
Ana Luísa Gonçalves graduated in Bioengineering (Biological Engineering Branch) by FEUP in 2012. In 2013, she started her PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering at FEUP. The PhD aimed the optimisation of culturing conditions of microalgae and cyanobacteria in laboratory and pilot scale to improve both CO2 capture and nutrients uptake from the culture medium, and was awarded with the Cum Laude distinction. Before concluding the PhD, she worked for 9 months as Wet Biomass Production Manager at Buggypower (Porto Santo). From October 2017 to January 2019, she worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the TexBoost – Less comodities More specialties project at CITEVE. Currently, AL Gonçalves is working as a researcher at LEPABE in the Process Intensification for microalgal production and Valorisation (PIV4Algae) project. AL Gonçalves published 27 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 9 book chapters, and her work was discussed in 15 international meetings. She edited a book and is guest editor of 2 Special Issues (from Applied Sciences and Energies). AL Gonçalves was supervisor/co-supervisor of 6 MSc (1 ongoing) and 2 PhD (ongoing). Recently, her project entitled “Microalgae to reduce the environmental impact of paper/pulp and textile industries: process integration and optimisation” was recognised with the Medal of Honor L’Oréal for Women in Science.
Renato Sousa works as a lead CFD engineer at Vestas Wind Systems, the world largest producer of wind turbines, focusing on the cooling design of the different systems and electric components that are inside the nacelle.
Graduated in Chemical Engineering at FEUP in 2000, finished the Ph.D in
2005 also in Chemical Engineering, in the area of fluid mechanics.
Within the Ph.D one year was spent in Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, having the opportunity to complete the Diploma Course and deepening the knowledge on fluid dynamics and heat transfer phenomena. After the Ph.D, worked for 5 years in CFD consultancy for industry and building energy, at Fluidinova, spin-off company from FEUP. In the following period of 3 years, the work was focused on the development of heat pumps, first at Bosch Termotechnology and then at Pinto Brasil.
A new cycle of academic research and CFD consultancy was completed, first at FEUP in a Post-Doc research on the flow of viscoelastic fluids in micro channels and then working at Fluid Structural Dynamics, before joining Vestas.
To keep the mind and body always looking for new challenges, his hobbies cover a wide range of activities, from snooker to sim racing, from programming to 3D modelling and animation.
Maria José Lima has a BSc in Biomedical Engineering (IPB, 2009) and an MSc in Micro and Nano Technologies (UM, 2012). After her MSc, she accepted a position as a research fellow at LSRE-LCM (University of Porto). In 2014, she continued in the same laboratory as a doctoral student, with the thesis “Selective photocatalytic conversions integrated on a continuous-flow microfluidic process”. She had a research stay abroad at the University of Bath, UK, in 2017. In early 2019, she finished her PhD, which was recently awarded the prize “Fundação Engenheiro António de Almeida”. In October 2019, she moved to the CF-UM-UP at the University of Minho. She is a postdoctoral fellow of On-Surf, a mobilizing project that involves national companies and I&D entities and focuses on applying surface engineering to different areas. M J Lima studied the surface interactions of thin films with polymers and pharmaceutical compounds. She also gained experience in the deposition of thin films by magnetron sputtering on polymeric substrates with antimicrobial properties. M J Lima published 16 papers in ISI journals, one book chapter, and co-authored 32 abstracts at national and international peer-reviewed conference proceedings, 14 of which were selected as oral communications. M J Lima acted as laboratory advisor for six researchers, supervisor of three graduate students and supervisor/co-supervisor of two MSc student (one ongoing).
