The Conference

Following the successful first international conference on nature-based solutions for coastal protection held in Bruges-Belgium, we are happy to announce that the second Building Coastal Resilience will take place at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto on 28 and 29 October 2024.

In this conference, we hope to combine the scientific information on large-scale demonstrations of hybrid nature-based solutions with the contributions from academia in the broader topic of coastal morphodynamics at sandy beaches and dunes. Exchange of information on running projects between researchers is key to the conference, with emphasis on young PhD researchers.

The involvement of young researchers is of overriding importance to us, and so opportunities will be created for them to meet, to run dedicated sessions and to interact with experienced peer researchers.

More information on the conference will be posted in the coming months. Please save the date, and we hope to welcome you in Porto.

Conference Topics

We bring together researchers and interested persons from government and industry on the topics of beach and dune dynamics, including:

  • Soft coastal protection
  • Coastal morphodynamics
  • Wave-driven sediment transport
  • Aeolian sediment transport
  • Sand-vegetation interaction
  • Beaches and dunes
  • Coastal resilience
  • Biogeomorphology
  • Nature based solutions

Contributions from the scientific community are foreseen to foster discussion and knowledge transfer on similar projects and related studies worldwide. Highlights will be provided on hybrid nature-based solutions in Portugal, including a field visit to the site.

Venue

Porto

The Portuguese northern city of Porto is the second largest city in the country and is one of the best destinations in Europe for a city break. It was in Porto that the independent Portugal was born in the 12th century. The city lies on the right bank of the Douro River and the historic centre was awarded UNESCO World Heritage, in 1996, due to its numerous medieval, baroque, neoclassic churches and palaces. But it is in the narrower streets where the unique atmosphere of the old Porto is to be found, where cultural heritage is an everyday fact of life. In addition, the surrounding region is of major industrial and commercial importance, noted for its textiles, shoes, furniture and jewellery, known for its cuisine, wines and the unique combination of tradition and modernity. Porto is also internationally known for exporting the famous Port wine.
Looking further ahead in 2024, conference participants will meet a city that offers a variety of resources and historic authenticity to its visitors. Experience a perfect combination of tradition and modernity and enjoy the unique atmosphere of Porto attending the Building Coastal Resilience 2024!
